Why Thailand Is One of the Best Countries for Solo Travel

Thailand consistently ranks among the most popular destinations for backpackers and solo travelers in Southeast Asia.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the country continues to attract millions of travelers because of its:

  • affordability
  • tourism infrastructure
  • transportation network
  • friendly local culture

From what our Lub d crew sees daily, Thailand works especially well for solo travelers because:

  • tourist areas are well connected
  • hostel culture is highly social
  • domestic travel is affordable
  • English is commonly spoken in major destinations

For many first-time backpackers, Thailand becomes the gateway to Southeast Asia travel.

Best Destinations in Thailand for Solo Travelers

One thing we’ve noticed after hosting travelers across Thailand is that each destination attracts a different type of traveler.

DestinationBest ForTypical Vibe
BangkokFirst-time solo travelersCity + social
PhuketNightlife & beach partiesHigh-energy
Koh SamuiBalanced island lifestyleRelaxed + social
Koh TaoDiving & adventureBackpacker-focused

This is why many guests combine multiple Lub d locations into one Thailand trip.

Is Thailand Safe for Solo Female Travelers? (What Our Crew Sees Daily)

This is the number one question we hear at reception:

“Is Thailand safe for solo female travelers?”

The honest answer:

Yes — Thailand is generally very safe for solo travelers.

But after hosting thousands of travelers, we’ve noticed something important:

Your accommodation and location matter more than people realize.

Guests who stay in:

  • social hostels
  • central locations
  • well-reviewed accommodations

usually feel comfortable much faster than travelers staying in isolated areas.

Crew Insights for Staying Safe in Thailand

What we recommend

  • Use Grab or Bolt instead of random taxis
  • Stay near public transportation
  • Buy a local SIM card immediately
  • Share live location with friends when traveling at night

What we recommend avoiding

  • Unregistered taxis
  • Walking alone in empty areas late at night
  • Booking unknown accommodations with poor reviews

Dorm vs. Private Room: Which Is Better for Solo Travelers?

At Lub d, we offer both — and honestly, the best choice depends on your travel style and social battery.

FeatureLub d DormsLub d Private Rooms
VibeSocial & energeticQuiet & comfortable
PrivacyCurtains & lockersFull private setup
Best ForBackpackers & social travelersDigital nomads & couples
SafetyFemale-only dorm optionsHotel-style security

One thing we see often:

Many solo travelers book dorms to meet people, then upgrade to private rooms later for balance.

How to Make Friends While Traveling Solo (Without It Feeling Awkward)

One of the biggest fears solo travelers have:

“What if I don’t meet anyone?”

At Lub d, our spaces are intentionally designed to make social interaction feel natural rather than forced.

1. Join Hostel Activities

Our crews organize activities specifically designed for solo travelers.

Examples include:

  • 🍻 Pub crawls in Phuket
  • 🏝 Pig Island tours in Koh Samui
  • 🧊 Ice bath challenges
  • 🍜 Local food tours
  • 🌊 Beach clean-ups

Explore:

These activities help travelers connect naturally before going out together.

2. The Welcome Drink Strategy

At several Lub d locations, guests join welcome drinks shortly after check-in.

This creates:

  • instant conversation starters
  • easy introductions
  • low-pressure social interaction

From what our crew sees:
travelers who join activities early usually make friends faster.

Why Social Hostels Are Replacing Traditional Hotels

One trend we’ve noticed growing rapidly:

Travelers increasingly choose social hostels (“poshtels”) instead of traditional hotels.

Why?

Because modern travelers value:

  • experiences
  • community
  • flexibility
  • social connection

more than simply having a private room.

This is especially true for:

  • Gen Z travelers
  • solo backpackers
  • digital nomads

At Lub d, we’ve built our spaces around this exact travel behavior.

What to Do vs. What to Avoid in Thailand

After years of helping travelers across Thailand, here’s our honest advice.

✅ DO THIS

Use lockers even in safe hostels

Thailand is safe, but smart travel habits matter.

Explore beyond tourist hotspots

For example:
👉 Lub d Bangkok Chinatown: https://lubd.com/bangkok-chinatown/

puts travelers right in the center of Bangkok’s street food culture.

Dress respectfully at temples

Cover shoulders and knees at religious sites.

Plan transportation ahead

Useful transport resources:

❌ AVOID THIS

“Too good to be true” tuk-tuk tours

Low-price city tours often lead to tourist traps.

Renting scooters without proper licenses

Road accidents are one of the biggest risks travelers face in Thailand.

Staying too far from activity areas

Many travelers choose ultra-cheap accommodations outside central areas — then spend more money and time on transportation.

Why Location Matters More Than Price

One thing our crew sees repeatedly:

Travelers who stay in central social areas almost always enjoy their trips more.

Examples:

  • Bangkok Siam → easier transport + nightlife
  • Patong Beach → nightlife + beach access
  • Chaweng Samui → social + walkable
  • Makati Manila → safer & more connected

The cheapest accommodation is not always the best value.

FAQ: Solo Travel With Lub d

“Is it weird to stay in a hostel if I’m over 30?”

Not at all.

Many travelers in their 30s and 40s choose Lub d because it combines:

  • hostel social atmosphere
  • hotel-level comfort
  • stylish design

“Do I need to book tours before arriving?”

Usually no.

Many guests meet travel groups after arriving and book activities together through our crews.

“Are there female-only dorms?”

Yes. Lub d offers female-only dorms.

“Which Lub d location is best for meeting people?”

From our experience:

  • Bangkok Siam → easiest for first-time travelers
  • Phuket → nightlife & parties
  • Koh Samui → balanced social atmosphere

Final Thoughts From the Lub d Crew

Solo travel can feel intimidating before you start.

But from what we’ve seen hosting thousands of travelers across Thailand and Southeast Asia:

Most people arrive nervous…
and leave with:

  • new friends
  • unforgettable memories
  • more confidence than they expected

And often, the biggest factor isn’t the destination itself.

It’s staying somewhere designed to help people connect naturally.

That’s exactly what Lub d was built for. 🌏

Highly recommend staying at @lubdexperience if you’re traveling solo!

Stayed here when it was just reopened after renovation.

Location is perfect for many reasons
– The stairs to BTS Skytrain are RIGHT IN FRONT of the hotel.
– The MBK Shopping is opposite
– The convenience store is next door
– Walking distance to Art Gallery, Siam Center, Siam Paragon, Jim Thompson House, and many more)

The staff was super friendly, and the hotel had daily activities for guests to join. You could simply make friends at the hotel if you travel alone.

I booked a private room with an ensuite bathroom. The size of the room was compact. The ceiling was low but I felt very comfortable and everything was just within reach.

If you look for a few nights’ stay in the city centre along the sky train line with easy access to everything, here is the place for you.

NOTE: Not recommended for sensitive sleepers as you will hear light noise from traffic and people from the corridor

I am a solo traveler and was made to feel very welcome by the incredible staff. They even surprised me with a birthday song and sticky rice. The hut was large, clean and AC worked efficiently. You can’t beat the location, right on the beach. Snorkeling in Tanote Bay was fun.

It is a really chill atmosphere, with a mix of families and couples. It was not loud. It had a real jungle feel to it. The all day breakfast was fantastic. They will arrange taxis for you to go anywhere on the island.

I am forever grateful for my time at spent at this special place.

I was actually pleasantly surprised at how good this hostel was. Decent rooms with good privacy. Facilities were very good and I would definitely stay here again. And for £20 a night in January, it was good value.

Word of warning though: Take earplugs! I think it’s not the fault of the of the hostel but it is right next to a main road and that stuff is noisy. Especially middle of the night with the occasional scooter going by. Especially if you’re in the end bunk next to the window (and no curtain to stop the light getting in). So two things I think the hostel could improve on is perhaps at least offer complimentary ear plugs and have the curtain extend to cover up the window
